Where to go: Hike to the Benson Lake Overlook on the Superior Hiking Trail (aka the Middle Trail) for views of the lake and the surrounding forests.

What you'll see:

The maples turned very quickly this past week, with most maple stands at about 75% full color. Birches and aspens are a little behind, with about 50% of the leaves turned yellow.

White cedars rim Benson Lake, and although they do not lose their leaves or turn colors in the fall, they add a wonderful, deep-green contrast to the yellows and golds of the surrounding deciduous trees.

Also of interest:

Many of our aster species do all of their blooming in late summer through early fall. Amongst the slowly turning leaves you will find a great show of clusters of purple and white aster flowers of several species.

Due to the wet summer, the Manitou River flows have not dwindled like most North Shore streams do during dry summers. A hike to the Cascades on the Superior Hiking Trail will afford you delightful views of the crashing, falling waters of the Manitou River.

Special Offer for Park Permits

Canít decide between a one-day or year-round park permit? The DNR has a special offer that can help. Start by purchasing a one-day permit for $5 and visit as many state parks as possible. After visiting the state parks, trade in the one-day permit by the end of that day and get $5 off the purchase of a year-round permit. Year-round permits, which cost $25, provide unlimited access to all 76 Minnesota state parks and recreation areas for a full year from the month of purchase.
