Wildlife Management Areas

WMAs celebrate 75 years

Access the outdoors

  • 1,506 public wildlife areas - divided into more than 1,800 sub units - with 1.37 million acres of habitat across the state.

  • Recreation for hunters and trappers, including small game, big game and waterfowl.

  • Wildlife watching opportunities include: upland birds, waterfowl, mammals, and more.

The WMA story

As increased mechanization in the 1940s allowed more farms to drain more wetlands to increase row crop production, learn how the DNR's Save the Wetlands program grew into today's extensive statewide network of more than 1,500 WMAs.

WMA users speak up

A survey of WMA users finds that 86 percent support on-going acquisition of public lands that provide wildlife habitat and access to hunters, wildlife watchers and countless others.
