Severe storms and tornadoes struck northern and central Minnesota, causing damage and injuries.

On the morning of June 19, 2016 a low pressure area was centered over western North Dakota with an associated cold front. This front moved to the east into western Minnesota by the afternoon hours, drawing up warm muggy air out ahead of it and set the stage for a widespread severe storm outbreak in Minnesota.

The severe storm event began in the morning hours in northwest Minnesota, as a cluster of storms moved eastward across Northwest Minnesota. Tennis ball-sized hail fell nine miles southwest of Baudette in Lake of the Woods County.

Dew point temperatures surged into the 70s during the afternoon of June 19 with a 73 degree dew point temperature in the Twin Cities. The Twin Cities also saw it's fourth 90 plus air temperature for the summer.

Intense storms redeveloped in the evening hours over northwestern and central Minnesota and moved east. There were tornado reports in Cass, Itasca and Wadena Counties. The National Weather Service is conducting a survey of damaged areas.

Northern Minnesota was hard hit. There were trees down in Carlton, St. Louis, Itasca, Lake and Cook Counties. There were injuries in several locations in the Boundary Waters Canoe area Wilderness. Three members of one group on Crooked Lake in Lake County were injured as lightning hit a nearby stand of trees. None of the injuries were life threatening. Farther east in Cook County one man was injured by a falling tree at Clove Lake. Tragically, one man lost his life by a falling tree at Duncan Lake, another person sustained injuries.

One tornado 4 miles northeast of Jacobson in Itasca County caused damage to a home and outbuildings.

In central Minnesota, there were numerous trees down in the Deerwood area of Crow Wing County. Trees fell on some mobile homes and cabins in Crow Wing County as well. There was an injury with trees trapping a family inside their home 6 miles southeast of Cuyuna Country State Recreation Center. After midnight, the severe storms moved eastward over Wisconsin, Canada and Lake Superior.

In the wake of the cold front on June 20, cooler and drier Canadian air rushed in across the state on gusty NW winds up to 30mph in some places. Flag Island had a wind gust of 40mph at Noon, June 20.
