Bucket List
Visit Afton State Park in Winter
Known for its blufftop prairies and rolling glacial moraine landscape, Afton State Park is a dramatic setting for outdoor adventures. Come winter, the park—which is southeast of the Twin Cities along the St. Croix River—transforms into a snow-carpeted wonderland, with 12 miles of snowshoe and hiking trails and another dozen miles of groomed classic cross-country ski trails.
While exploring Afton in winter, watch for white-tailed deer, red fox, coyotes, pheasant, wild turkey, and other year-round residents. If you’re lucky you might spy—or at least hear—a great-horned owl.
After a ski or a hike, warm up in the visitor center. Or better yet, extend your stay with an overnight in one of four heated camper cabins, where you can unwind and make plans to return to the park in warmer months.
