The voluntary Loon-Friendly Lake Registry Program is a way for community members to support loons on an individual lake. When you enroll in the program, Minnesota DNR staff will work closely with you to develop and implement a Loon-Friendly Lake Plan.

What does a Loon-Friendly Lake Plan Include?

  • Documents the history of loons on the lake
  • Describes changes to the lake in the last 10 years
  • Assesses the lake’s resources for loons to nest, rear their young, and forage for food
  • Considers factors preventing loons from thriving on the lake, such as human disturbance and predation
  • Connects community members to the MPCA Get the Lead Out! Program
  • A list of recommended voluntary actions to improve the lake’s conditions for loons
