I Can Climb!

Send the family up a cliff with a real rock climbing experience designed for first-time climbers. Scale the colorful Sioux quartzite cliffs that rise above the surrounding tall grass prairie at Blue Mounds State Park in southwestern Minnesota. Ascend the scenic bluffs along the St. Croix River Valley at Interstate State Park. Or, experience the thrill of climbing Shovel Point, the North Shore cliffs that tower over Lake Superior at Tettegouche State Park.

  • Hands-on instruction by trained professionals from Vertical Endeavors Guided Adventures (VEGA).
  • No experience necessary.
  • Use of helmet, harness and shoes.
  • A supportive environment. Great for kids!
  • Depending on group sizes, participants will have the opportunity to ascend one or two routes.

I Can Climb!: Perfect for first-time and beginning climbers, these 90-minute programs cover the basics and will have you climbing firsthand. (Ages 5 and up.)

I Can Climb! On the North Shore: Need more adrenaline? Climbers in these 90-minute programs are lowered from the top of the cliff to just above Lake Superior, and then climb back up! (Ages 10 and up.)

I Can Climb!

These programs are designed especially for first-time and beginning climbers ages five and older; no experience is necessary. Participants will try rock climbing first-hand with help from skilled guides. Register for one of four sessions: 9–10:30 a.m., 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m., 1:30–3 p.m., or 3:30–5 p.m.

Programs at Blue Mounds State Park require a short walk on a paved trail to the climbing area. Allow about 15 minutes for your hike, in order to arrive at your climbing program on time.

  • $5 per climber.
  • Ages five and older. Climbers under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
  • Advance registration is required.
  • A vehicle permit is required to enter all Minnesota state parks.
    ($5/day or $25/year—this is not included in the cost of registration.)

I Can Climb! On the North Shore

If you or the kids are looking for a little more of an adrenaline rush, head to stunning Tettegouche State Park. Climbers are lowered from the top of the cliff to just above Lake Superior and then climb back up. No experience necessary. Register for one of four sessions: 9–10:30 a.m., 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m., 1:30–3 p.m., or 3:30–5 p.m.

Note: Programs at Tettegouche State Park require a short hike to the climbing area. Allow about 20 minutes for your hike, in order to arrive at your climbing program on time.

Age requirements and waivers

Children under age five may not climb. Climbers must be at least 10 years old for I Can Climb! On the North Shore. Participants under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

All participants are required to sign a waiver of liability prior to climbing (completed by a parent or legal guardian if under age 18). The waiver will be provided at the program but can also be found here.This is a PDF file. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to download it. Have it done before arriving to maximize your climbing time.

Cancellations

Program fees for I Can Climb! and I Can Climb! The North Shore are non-refundable unless the program is cancelled by the instructors. All programs are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather or hazardous conditions.
