Seasonal Update

Water:
Water is available year-round at the Visitor Center, at the solar pump in the Lower Picnic Area, and at the solar pump in the Backpack Campground.

Drinking Water:
Water is available year-round at the Visitor Center, at the solar pump in the Lower Picnic Area, and at the solar pump in the Backpack Campground.

Bathroom Facilities:
Modern bathroom facilities are available year-round in the Visitor Center. The facilities are wheelchair accessible. Vault toilets are also available year-round throughout the park.

Showers:
The park does not have showers.

Dump Station:
The park does not have a dump station.

 

Campgrounds:
Camping is available year-round at this park.

  • Twenty-eight (28) hike-in campsites are available in the main Backpack Campground. The sites are non-electric, and require a roughly 1 mile hike from the parking area.
  • The park also has two remote hike-in sites available (Homestead & Meadow), and we accept same-day reservations for these sites by calling the park office.
  • A single canoe site is available as well (canoe/kayak/boat is not required to stay in this site).
  • Group Camps #1 and #2 are open year round, but have limited access in the winter depending on snow depth. Please call the park office to verify availability during the winter months.
  • Reservations can now be made year-round, and are recommended May through October.

    Electric Sites:
    The park does not have electric sites.

    Special Notes for RV Campers:
    RV camping is not available at Afton State Park, but is available at a nearby county park, St. Croix Bluffs, on a seasonal basis.

     

    Contact Notes:

    Best time to contact the park:
    Friday - Sunday: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
    Monday - Thursday: 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.; but varies depending on staff availability

     

    Trail Notes:

  • Horse trails are now closed for the season, please call the park office for spring opening dates.
  • All trails remain open to hiking, please refer to Afton State Park's Snow Conditions Webpage for weekly ski trail condition updates. Be prepared for slippery trail conditions
  • The North River Trail loop will no longer be groomed for cross country skiing. This change will provide an opportunity for hikers and snowshoers to walk along the river. The South River Trail loop will continue to be groomed for skiing as usual.
  • Please keep all foot traffic and pets off of groomed ski trails.

    Season Rentals:

  • The Visitor Center is now staffed by a park naturalist and will be used for scheduled programs. The building will not be available to reserve, but is open to the public on a daily basis when not being used for programming.
  • GPS Units, Fishing Rods/Tackle Boxes, Birding Kits, and Kid's Discovery Kits can be checked out for free at the contact station.
  • Snowshoes are now available for rent from the contact station for $6 per pair.
  • Naturalist Programs and Park Tours:
    Naturalist programs are available year round. Please check our Events Calendar.
