Dam safety grants

Program Purpose: To improve the safety and condition of publicly owned dams and water level control structures.

Eligible Projects: Dam reconstruction, repair, and removal.

Who May Apply: Cities, counties, townships, watershed districts

Priorities: Priority is given to:
1. The improvement of important or hazardous dams
2. The removal of abandoned and nonfunctional dams.

Level of Assistance: Reimbursement of costs, up to 50% for repairs, up to 100% for removals. Grants have ranged from $25,000 to $1,000,000

General Information: The program is authorized by Minnesota Statutes 103G.511 and was created in 1978 in response to the federal Dam Safety Act.
