Heavy Rains and Severe Storms: July 7 & 9, 2009

On the heels of severe storms and a tornado reported in Cottonwood County on Tuesday July 7th, more severe thunderstorms rolled across southwest Minnesota on Thursday July 9th. A tornado was reported by a storm spotter three and a half miles southwest of Fulda near the border of Murray and Nobles County. One to three inches of rain fell across the southern tier counties of Minnesota along the Iowa border from Worthington to Blue Earth. The heaviest rain reported was 3.53 inches at Lakefield in Jackson County. Some street flooding was reported in Worthington along with some golf ball sized hail to the west and northwest of Worthington.

The storms formed out ahead of a sluggish cold front in the Dakotas. Both rounds of storms missed the areas in the state that needed the rain the most. The cool front pushed to the east over Minnesota during the day on July 10th and ushered in northwest winds and drier air. The dew point temperature at the Twin Cities International Airport fell from 63 degrees at noon to 52 degrees by 3pm.

Below are Public Information Statements on the July 8-9 storms courtesy the National Weather Service.
